The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry
recommends that your child's first dental
examination should occur between the ages of
6 and 12 months or shortly after the first
tooth erupts. Subsequent dental visits every
3 to 6 months allow the dentists to monitor
the child's dental development. Many problems that might develop
can be prevented.
Primary or baby teeth are important for the
proper development and formation of the
permanent teeth, jaw alignment and speech
development. Proper care of primary teeth
results in a bright, healthy smile and a
positive, self-confident child.
Children require special equipment and
explanations. We strive at all times to make
dental visits a positive experience. Our
staff is our greatest asset and is dedicated
to making your child's visit to our office a
pleasant and rewarding experience. They are
dedicated professionals and are
knowledgeable in working with children.
We use language that children can understand,
so they can better accept dental
treatment. We do not use any form of
oral sedation with our patients in the office. We feel our method of tell, show and do
works very well. The child learns that a
dental visit can become a regular and
pleasant part of their health routine.
Children's
Behavior
Every child has a unique personality and
each responds differently to new situations.
Crying is one way that some children express
themselves. This behavior is normal when children are nervous, tired or
having some discomfort. We try to calm
the child by giving praise and explaining what we are doing. All dental
treatment is followed by words of
encouragement and a special prize.
Prizes
All children are inherently good and
deserving of a reward at the end of a
procedure. These small prizes are a nice
ending to the appointment. We use praise and positive reinforcement to give
your child the best possible experience. We
love children and want them to have bright,
healthy smiles.
Treatment
Area
Parents may accompany their child
to the treatment area, but quite often, children do better without
their parents being present. We have an open area so the children
can see each other and this helps to reassure them. Children are
never left alone. Trained dental personnel will always be close
your child while he or she is in the office for treatment.
